Elizabeth Green (hat tip Ezra Klein) discusses the importance of teaching techniques. Here’s one key passage (at least for people like me):

“The testing mandates in No Child Left Behind had generated a sea of data, and researchers were now able to parse student achievement in ways they never had before. A new generation of economists devised statistical methods to measure the ‘value added’ to a student’s performance by almost every factor imaginable: class size versus per-pupil funding versus curriculum. When researchers ran the numbers in dozens of different studies, every factor under a school’s control produced just a tiny impact, except for one: which teacher the student had been assigned to.”

But who is a good teacher?

As Klein says, “There’s a tendency to let the conversation over teachers become a conversation over replacing the current crop of assumed mediocrities with highly-educated professionals. This is particularly prevalent when the conversation is being had by highly-educated, high-achieving media and political professionals who are not actually teachers, but quietly think that if they were teachers, they’d be doing a bang-up job.”

But, as Green writes, “Among the factors that do not predict whether a teacher will succeed: a graduate-school degree, a high score on the SAT, an extroverted personality, politeness, confidence, warmth, enthusiasm and having passed the teacher-certification exam on the first try.”

This is an important point. When I was a management consultant, I was part of a team that worked with the administration of a city school district in an attempt to improve student performance. That was hubris enough. But to our credit, we didn’t think we knew anything about teaching; we worked on issues like recruiting, data analysis (test results came back as a pile of floppy disks that no one ever even stuck into a computer), and setting up internal mentorship programs.

You see, by that point I already knew I wasn’t a particularly good teacher. I had taught a music class of junior high school students and two seminars of Berkeley undergraduates (which is a piece of cake compared to primary or secondary school), and once you do that it becomes obvious pretty quickly that the ability to absorb information, follow directions, work diligently on your own, meet a standardized set of expectations, and generally conform to an existing validation system will not get you far in a classroom. Of course, there are people from Ivy League schools who also have the skills necessary to be a good teacher (whatever those are), but that’s an accident, not a result.

This should be obvious to anyone who’s been to a top university, where most teachers range from the pretty good to the abysmally bad. Would you want them teaching your own kids in elementary school? I didn’t think so.

Green’s article is mainly about people who have been studying what those skills are and trying to train teachers in those skills, which is an interesting story.

Some time ago I received a call from a colleague. He was about to give a student a zero for his answer to a physics question, while the student claimed a perfect score. The instructor and the student agreed to an impartial arbiter, and I was selected.I read the examination question:

“SHOW HOW IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE HEIGHT OF A TALL BUILDING WITH THE AID OF A BAROMETER.”

The student had answered, “Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of the rope is the height of the building.” The student really had a strong case for full credit since he had really answered the question completely and correctly! On the other hand, if full credit were given, it could well contribute to a high grade in his physics course and to certify competence in physics, but the answer did not confirm this. I suggested that the student have another try. I gave the student six minutes to answer the question with the warning that the answer should show some knowledge of physics. At the end of five minutes, he had not written anything. I asked if he wished to give up, but he said he had many answers to this problem; he was just thinking of the best one. I excused myself for interrupting him and asked him to please go on. In the next minute, he dashed off his answer which read:

“Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula x=0.5*a*t^^2, calculate the height of the building.”

At this point, I asked my colleague if he would give up. He conceded, and gave the student almost full credit. While leaving my colleague’s office, I recalled that the student had said that he had other answers to the problem, so I asked him what they were. “Well,” said the student, “there are many ways of getting the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer. For example, you could take the barometer out on a sunny day and measure the height of the barometer, the length of its shadow, and the length of the shadow of the building,and by the use of simple proportion, determine the height of the building.” “Fine,” I said, “and others?” “Yes,” said the student, “there is a very basic measurement method you will like. In this method, you take the barometer and begin to walk up the stairs. As you climb the stairs, you mark off the length of the barometer along the wall. You then count the number of marks, and this will give you the height of the building in barometer units.” “A very direct method, of course.”

If you want a more sophisticated method, you can tie the barometer to the end of a string, swing it as a pendulum, and determine the value of g at the street level and at the top of the building. From the difference between the two values of g, the height of the building,in principle, can be calculated.” “On this same tact, you could take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to just above the street, and then swing it as a pendulum. You could then calculate the height of the building by the period of the precession”. “Finally,” he concluded, “there are many other ways of solving the problem. Probably the best,” he said, “is to take the barometer to the basement and knock on the superintendent’s door. When the superintendent answers, you speak to him as follows: “Mr. Superintendent, here is a fine barometer. If you will tell me the height of the building, I will give you this barometer.” At this point, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school and college instructors trying to teach him how to think.

En una universidad para ser profesor de maestría se requiere tener doctorado y para enseñar en la universidad piden maestría.

Eso solamente cumple con la primer cualidad, algunas veces con la segunda, tercera y cuarta, pero casi nunca con la quinta o sexta (porque en lugar de estar enseñando estaban estudiando).

Yo propondría que un profesor con doctorado no pueda enseñar en maestría o en la universidad sin haber enseñado por lo menos durante un año en primaria.

Así desarrollaría 3,5 y 6.

Durante el tiempo que estuve en la universidad aprendí poco, conocí algunas personas interesantes y me divertí mucho (pero fuera de la escuela).

Decidí ir a la universidad a perseguir un sueño, entré en el 2002, la burbuja del internet se acababa de tronar, cientos de compañías habían perdido mucho dinero y de todas maneras yo creía en algo, que las computadoras (no las PCs que están en tu escritorio siendo subutilizadas) sino las computadoras en general y el internet, este nuevo medio que todavía era muy nuevo para saber que iba a pasar con él, algún día serian capaces de hacer que todas las cosas fueran un poco más inteligentes y por lo tanto que la sociedad sería mucho más eficiente.
Pensé que esta combinación de tecnologías libraría a las personas de tareas repetitivas de procesamiento de información, como hacer exceles y exceles de reportes siempre iguales, que daría mucho más libertad a las personas para dedicar su tiempo a ser creativos, a pensar, a mejorar algo, a poner su granito de arena, que incrementaría la transparencia de nuestros gobiernos, que nos permitiría comunicarnos más directamente con las demás personas, por ejemplo con las que elegimos para gobernar nuestra sociedad, que gracias a la automatización nadie tendría que llenar papelitos pidiendo un lápiz más en su oficina, que muchas actividades que antes hacían las personas, porque las máquinas todavía no eran lo suficientemente capaces de hacerlas poco a poco se irían automatizando, que íbamos a poder trabajar desde donde quisiéramos y otras muchas cosas que ahora que las escribo me doy cuenta de mi ingenuidad y de que el cambio toma tiempo.

Mi sueño era volverme parte de esa revolución, escogí el lugar incorrecto. Un campus nuevo de una universidad con mucho prestigio en mi país, no se si también en el mundo. Porqué lo escogí? Por que estaba cerca de mi casa (que tontería) y por que en la otra universidad cerca de mi casa no había carrera de computación, por que estaba más cerca que los otros dos campus de la misma universidad que hay en mi ciudad y que están (dependiendo del tráfico) aproximadamente igual de lejos (en tiempo) de mi casa.

Los primeros semestres eramos pocos, era fácil tener contacto con los niveles más altos de la dirección y eso me daba mucha esperanza, pensaba que nos iban a escuchar si teníamos sugerencias para aprender más, para mejorar la forma en que se daban las clases, los métodos que usaban los profesores, de nuevo me equivoqué. Este no era un campus nuevo, era un campus más de una institución enorme, con miles de procesos ocultos, reglas y trámites. Cambiar una institución de ese tipo es algo que como cualquier cambio importante me di cuenta que toma tiempo.

Quiero aclarar algo, me encanta aprender. Nunca fuí mal estudiante. En prepa, lo que hacía si el profesor estaba confundiendo a mis compañeros era muy simple, le dejaba de poner atención y me ponía a pensar, en lo que fuera, pero casi siempre en preguntas estilo niño de cinco años, porqué, porqué, porqué y si no tenía preguntas, leía el libro de texto (si es que había uno) y aprendía por mi cuenta lo que le costaba tanto trabajo al profesor explicar.

Todo esto cambió en la universidad, dejó de haber libros. Durante toda mi carrera probablemente leí completos dos libros. Pero eso no es lo grave, lo grave es que si no sabes de donde sale el contenido de lo que supuestamente quieres aprender, cómo le haces para aprender por tu cuenta?, no se puede, es requisito irte a sentar al salón a ver de qué se le ocurre hablar al profesor hoy.

En la universidad sólo en pocas clases llegué a aprender algo, de 45 materias que cursé probablemente tuve un aha! en 5, y tal vez exagero. Lo que aprendí nunca fue muy a fondo, había que terminar el plan de estudios, lo que significaba darse una mojadita de un millón de temas, todos relacionados entre sí solo porque pertenecían a la misma lista y seguían uno al otro. Para lograr cubrir el millón de temas no era necesario trabajar más tiempo fuera del salón practicándolos, lo único necesario era sentarse innumerables y largas horas viendo una gran pantalla (eso si muy moderna) con una presentación en powerpoint en donde cada diapositiva contenía cientos de palabras y oraciones en bloques de texto muy difíciles de leer, menos entender, proceso que rompía no nada más todas las reglas del sentido común sino de la psicología del aprendizaje. De vez en cuando hacíamos ejercicios, pero muy de vez en cuando. Las tareas eran del tipo prepa, qué es tal, quién fue tal, cuándo se inventó el tal, solo hubo uno que otro proyecto interesante. Las calificaciones reflejaban una mezcla de tu asistencia a la clase, el número de respuestas correctas que tuviste en los exámenes (de las cuales una gran parte involucraba recordar grandes cantidades de información durante poco tiempo), el número de tareas con letra bonita y a tiempo que entregaste, la empatía del profesor hacia ti y, como en todo, un poco de suerte. Ah nunca dije "lo que aprendiste", perdón, a veces, pero muy pocas veces, tus calificaciones reflejaban si aprendiste algo.

Porqué te cuento esto?
Si estás en mi misma situación, para que te preguntes: a qué voy a la universidad? qué aprendí hoy? que quiero aprender a hacer?
Si eres profesor, para que tengas cuidado y trates de no desmotivar a tus alumnos.
Si trabajas en una institución de enseñanza, para que te pongas en contacto con la realidad de los alumnos.
Si eres padre o madre de un alumno para que le preguntes la siguiente vez que lo veas, no qué se sacó de calificación, sino qué aprendió hoy.

Lectures are Ineffective

Many conferences today are moving towards much shorter lectures: 15, 20, and 30 minutes. I think this dramatically increases value to the attendee (while making things significantly harder for the presenters and vastly harder for the organizers).

Phillip Greenspun, in a post on improving undergraduate CS quality that holds for professional training as well, concludes:

Lecturing has been found to be extremely ineffective by all researchers. The FAA limits lectures to 20 minutes or so in U.S. flight schools.
Lab and project work are where students learn the most. The school that adopted lab/projects as the core of their approach quickly zoomed to the first position among American undergrad schools of engineering (www.olin.edu).
Engineers learn by doing progressively larger projects, not by doing what they’re told in one-week homework assignments or doing small pieces of a big project
Everything that is part of a bachelor’s in CS can be taught as part of a project that has all phases of the engineering cycle, e.g., teach physics and calculus by assigning students to build a flight simulator
It makes a lot of sense to separate teaching/coaching from grading and, in the Internet age, it is trivial to do so. Define the standard, but let others decide whether or not your students have met the standard.
A student who graduates with a portfolio of 10 systems, each of which he or she understands completely and can show off the documentation as well as the function (on the Web or on the student’s laptop), is a student who will get a software development job.

Según este artículo de la Universidad de South Wales en Australia, hemos sido educados de la manera errónea, abrumando nuestras cabezas con demasiada información en muy poco tiempo, de la cual sólo podremos retener una cantidad insignificante de información.

Imaginen esta escena, un salón de clases repleto, todos los alumnos estamos siendo expuestos a un ataque de PowerPoint, recibiendo decenas de pantallas por hora, cada una de estas pantallas está siendo LEÍDA por el profesor, ¿Por qué la lee y repite lo que ya estamos nosotros leyendo? ¿acaso no sabemos ya leer?, pantallas de PowerPoint llenas de información sin organizar y sin estructura. Pues esto nos llevó a sacar una pequeña cuenta, ¿cuántas pantallas de PowerPoint habremos visto durante mis 5 años de carrera?

durante mi carrera

Si, es algo que da miedo, de esas 75,000 posiblemente no recuerde más de 10 en estos momentos.

¡¡Es momento de dejar de enseñar de esa forma!! Así no estamos aprendiendo, necesitamos discutir y experimentar más, así como leer menos.

¿Por qué en la escuela nos inculcan el miedo a innovar?

¿A qué le puede temer un profesor "común y corriente"? La visión que tenemos del profesor en México es el de un ser superior, todopoderoso, conocedor de todos los detalles y misterios más ocultos de la materia que está impartiendo. Esta visión hace que los profesores tengan cierta prepotencia y soberbia, no están muy dispuestos a aceptar algún comentario que pueda o no contradecir lo que ellos nos están tratando de enseñar.

¿A qué le puede temer el profesor? Al conocimiento. Recuerdo un capítulo de los simpson en donde Lisa se roba todos los libros teachers edition de los profesores, estos se ven superados al no saber ninguna respuesta, todas las respuestas estaban en los libros teachers edition. Algo similar nos pasa a nosotros como alumnos; Cierta maestra nos ha prohibido el navegar en Internet mientras estamos en su clase. Ayer nos regañó por estar investigando acerca del tema que ella exponía en clase, le comentamos que a nosotros nos gusta tomar lo que ella dice, buscarlo en internet y tratar de enriquecer el conocimiento que podamos adquirir, a lo que ella nos conestó que no le importaba y que dejaramos de hacer eso.

¿Qué pasa cuando un alumno sabiendo lo que dice contradice al profesor? Pues esto es inaceptable en estos días, nadie puede saber más que un profesor. Ayer mismo, con la misma maestra, ella empezó a hablar de un tema del cual se notaba que no dominaba, al ser contradecida, el nervio no se hizo esperar y todos empezamos a ver como la maestra sutilmente cambiaba el tema para no enfrentar la pregunta que se la acababa de hacer.

Por eso, yo he decido no seguir sus reglas y hacer lo que YO creo es correcto para mi aprendizaje, y por supuesto no dejaré que la escuela interrumpa mi proceso de aprendizaje.

Muchas gracias profesores, por lo menos me enseñaron algo: ¡a no seguir sus reglas!

¿Hasta cuánto es suficiente cuestionar a un profesor?

¿En qué momento el cuestionamiento a un profesor deja de ser aceptable y se vuelve irrespetuoso o terquedad? Estamos acostumbrados a aceptar todo lo que un profesor diga sin cuestionarlo, cuando alguien cuestiona un profesor, no sabe como reaccionar y la respuesta más sencilla es el regaño...

¿Por qué tengo que aceptar todo lo que me dice el profesor sin cuestionar?

Bien lo dijo Einstein, todo en este universo es relativo...

¿Por qué tengo que contestar lo que el profesor quiere que conteste y no lo que yo creo?

Si yo he adquirido el conocimiento necesario como para cuestionar lo que me están diciendo, e incluso he logrado crear mi propia idea al respecto, ¿Por qué esto no se considera aprendizaje?

Creo que si logras entender algo hasta el punto de cuestionarlo, enfrentarlo y analizar tanto virtudes como defectos de ese algo, haz logrado llegar un paso más allá de lo requerido.

Estoy llevando una clase donde el profesor me dijo que si no quería ir a clase, podía no asistir a clases y nada más tenía que presentar los examenes.

Me comentó que si yo tenía la posibilidad de obtener el conocimiento de otra fuente y que yo sintiera que estuviera aprendiendo mejor, que lo hiciera. Y pues le tomé la palabra.

Entonces ¿Por qué estoy pagando la escuela? ya que no estoy tomando clases (cosa que me encanta), estoy pagandole a mi escuela para que certifiquen mi conocimiento. Mi profesor de la clase que sólo tomo examenes únicamente está certificando que yo tengo los conocimientos necesarios para cubrir el temario.

De hecho, en esta clase me está llendo mucho mejor que a la mayoría de mis compañeros, yo estoy buscando la información por mi cuenta, y a diferencia de mis compañeros, la información que estoy encontrando está actualizada y la encontré yo, por lo que es mucho más fácil de retener y razonar!

¿¿Por qué hay profesores (alentados por escuelas) que todavía se empeñan en tomar lista?? ¿¿Por qué creen que no podemos aprender por nuestra cuenta?? ya está demostrado que se puede aprender, más, mejor y razonar más si lo busco y aprendo yo mismo!

¿Qué nos califican en la escuela? que tanto pudimos aprender en un periodo, meses, semestres o años, ¿qué tanto vale esto? ¿Por qué no miden cuanto podemos realizar a partir de lo que nos han tratado de enseñar?

El poder crear algo, significa que hemos podido conocer algo anteriormente. Los proyectos que nos dejan en la escuela son de verdadera lástima, destruyen nuestra capacidad inventiva; Hagan una calculadora, hagan un programa que haga algo que ya inventaron hace 50 años.

¿No creen que deberían de medir nuestra capacidad de poder crear algo nuevo en vez de medir nuestra capacidad de repetir como changuitos?

¡Mi título universitario vale una cagada!

Llevo 2 años estudiando una carrera universitaria, desde antes de ingresar a la universidad era muy obvio que poder entrar a cualquier universidad en México es realmente sencillo, sólo tienes que pasar un examen de cultura general, unas cuantas sumas, otras restas y ya eres un pasante de ingeniero.

Es realmente frustrante voltear a ver a tus compañeros de clase y darte cuenta que no están estudiando la carrera adecuada, no porque mi carrera no sea buena o mala, sino porque no es la carrera adecuado para ELLOS. Estudio Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales, la gran mayoría de los que estudian esta carrera han ingresado a esta carrera porque les han prometido mucho dinero. Pues gracias a ellos ¡cada vez hay menos dinero para todos los que estudiamos esto!

El que gente que no tiene la habilidad o el talento para estudiar una carrera hace que la carrera se demerite, son ellos los que hacen que los profesores sean barcos y nadie aprenda nada, son ellos los que cuando tienen su título hacen parecer realmente fácil estudiar una carrera, pues realmente no aprendieron nada más que a pasar materias. Gracias a ellos los títulos universitarios están muy demeritados, gracias a ellos seguramente tendré que estudiar una maestría o un doctorado para poder demostrar en papel que tengo más conocimientos que ellos, pues ya que los dos tenemos exactamente el mismo título....

También tenemos que agradecer a las instituciones educativas que hacen cada vez más fácil el poder ingresar a una carrera aunque no tenga el perfil adecuado para hacerlo. Simplemente no todos estamos hechos para estudiar, hay gente que es muy buena jugando fútbol, otros son muy buenos carpinteros, otros son muy buenos estudiantes. ¡No todos somos estudiantes!

Como es tan fácil obtener un título universitario, los pobres carpinteros y demás personas que no tienen un título universitario no son reconocidos en su área de trabajo.

A final de cuentas, mi título vale para una cagada y si no lo tuviera --aunque fuera el mejor carpintero de la historia-- no podría mantenerme ni a mi mismo...

Si no te apasiona, lo aprendes?

Existen personas con una enorme capacidad de retención, sin embargo, no todos podemos almacenar datos sin vincularnos con ellos a un nivel emocional.

El aprendizaje debe ser emocionante.

Es por eso que no entiendo porqué algunos profesores se dedican a dormir a sus alumnos.

No deberíamos calificar a los profesores de acuerdo a su capacidad de emocionar a sus alumnos ?
