(hat tip &lt;a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2010/03/teaching_teachers.html"&gt;Ezra Klein&lt;/a&gt;) discusses the importance of teaching techniques. Here’s one key passage (at least for people like me):&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;“The testing mandates in No Child Left Behind had generated a sea of data, and researchers were now able to parse student achievement in ways they never had before. A new generation of economists devised statistical methods to measure the ‘value added’ to a student’s performance by almost every factor imaginable: class size versus per-pupil funding versus curriculum. When researchers ran the numbers in dozens of different studies, every factor under a school’s control produced just a tiny impact, except for one: which teacher the student had been assigned to.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;/span&gt; But who is a good teacher?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;As Klein says, “There’s a tendency to let the conversation over teachers become a conversation over replacing the current crop of assumed mediocrities with highly-educated professionals. This is particularly prevalent when the conversation is being had by highly-educated, high-achieving media and political professionals who are not actually teachers, but quietly think that if they were teachers, they’d be doing a bang-up job.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;But, as Green writes, “Among the factors that do not predict whether a teacher will succeed: a graduate-school degree, a high score on the SAT, an extroverted personality, politeness, confidence, warmth, enthusiasm and having passed the teacher-certification exam on the first try.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;This is an important point. When I was a management consultant, I was part of a team that worked with the administration of a city school district in an attempt to improve student performance. That was hubris enough. But to our credit, we didn’t think we knew anything about teaching; we worked on issues like recruiting, data analysis (test results came back as a pile of floppy disks that no one ever even stuck into a computer), and setting up internal mentorship programs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;You see, by that point I already knew I wasn’t a particularly good teacher. I had taught a music class of junior high school students and two seminars of Berkeley undergraduates (which is a piece of cake compared to primary or secondary school), and once you do that it becomes obvious pretty quickly that the ability to absorb information, follow directions, work diligently on your own, meet a standardized set of expectations, and generally conform to an existing validation system will not get you far in a classroom. Of course, there are people from Ivy League schools who &lt;em&gt;also&lt;/em&gt; have the skills necessary to be a good teacher (whatever those are), but that’s an accident, not a result.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;This should be obvious to anyone who’s been to a top university, where most teachers range from the pretty good to the abysmally bad. Would you want them teaching your own kids in elementary school? I didn’t think so.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Green’s article is mainly about people who have been studying what those skills are and trying to train teachers in those skills, which is an interesting story.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; He was about to give a student a zero for his answer to a physics question, while the student claimed a perfect score. The instructor and the student agreed to an impartial arbiter, and I was selected.I read the examination question:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“SHOW HOW IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE HEIGHT OF A TALL BUILDING WITH THE AID OF A BAROMETER.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The student had answered, “Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of the rope is the height of the building.” The student really had a strong case for full credit since he had really answered the question completely and correctly! On the other hand, if full credit were given, it could well contribute to a high grade in his physics course and to certify competence in physics, but the answer did not confirm this. I suggested that the student have another try. I gave the student six minutes to answer the question with the warning that the answer should show some knowledge of physics. At the end of five minutes, he had not written anything. I asked if he wished to give up, but he said he had many answers to this problem; he was just thinking of the best one. I excused myself for interrupting him and asked him to please go on. In the next minute, he dashed off his answer which read:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula x=0.5*a*t^^2, calculate the height of the building.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this point, I asked my colleague if he would give up. He conceded, and gave the student almost full credit. While leaving my colleague’s office, I recalled that the student had said that he had other answers to the problem, so I asked him what they were. “Well,” said the student, “there are many ways of getting the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer. For example, you could take the barometer out on a sunny day and measure the height of the barometer, the length of its shadow, and the length of the shadow of the building,and by the use of simple proportion, determine the height of the building.” “Fine,” I said, “and others?” “Yes,” said the student, “there is a very basic measurement method you will like. In this method, you take the barometer and begin to walk up the stairs. As you climb the stairs, you mark off the length of the barometer along the wall. You then count the number of marks, and this will give you the height of the building in barometer units.” “A very direct method, of course.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want a more sophisticated method, you can tie the barometer to the end of a string, swing it as a pendulum, and determine the value of g at the street level and at the top of the building. From the difference between the two values of g, the height of the building,in principle, can be calculated.” “On this same tact, you could take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to just above the street, and then swing it as a pendulum. You could then calculate the height of the building by the period of the precession”. “Finally,” he concluded, “there are many other ways of solving the problem. Probably the best,” he said, “is to take the barometer to the basement and knock on the superintendent’s door. When the superintendent answers, you speak to him as follows: “Mr. Superintendent, here is a fine barometer. If you will tell me the height of the building, I will give you this barometer.” At this point, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. Un sistema (de calificación) que asegure que todos aprendan &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Yo le agregaría:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;5. Capacidad de comunicación&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;6. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;de procesamiento de información, como hacer exceles y exceles de reportes siempre iguales, que &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;daría mucho más libertad a las personas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; para dedicar su tiempo a ser creativos, a pensar, a mejorar algo, a poner su granito de arena, que incrementaría la transparencia de nuestros gobiernos, que nos permitiría comunicarnos más directamente con las demás personas, por ejemplo con las que elegimos para gobernar nuestra sociedad, que gracias a la automatización nadie tendría que llenar papelitos pidiendo un lápiz más en su oficina, que muchas actividades que antes hacían las personas, porque las máquinas todavía no eran lo suficientemente capaces de hacerlas poco a poco se irían automatizando, que íbamos a poder trabajar desde donde quisiéramos y otras muchas cosas que ahora que las escribo &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;me doy cuenta de mi ingenuidad y de que el cambio toma tiemp&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;o.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mi sueño era &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;volverme parte de esa revolución, escogí el lugar incorrecto.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; Un campus nuevo de una universidad con mucho prestigio en mi país, no se si también en el mundo. Porqué lo escogí? Por que estaba cerca de mi casa (que tontería) y por que en la otra universidad cerca de mi casa no había carrera de computación,  por que estaba más cerca que los otros dos campus de la misma universidad que hay en mi ciudad y que están (dependiendo del tráfico) aproximadamente igual de lejos (en tiempo) de mi casa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;Los primeros semestres eramos pocos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, era fácil tener contacto con los niveles más altos de la dirección y eso me daba mucha esperanza, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;pensaba que nos iban a escuchar &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;si teníamos sugerencias para aprender más, para mejorar la forma en que se daban las clases, los métodos que usaban los profesores, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;de nuevo me equivoqué&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;. Este no era un campus nuevo, era un campus más de una institución enorme, con miles de procesos ocultos, reglas y trámites. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;Cambiar una institución de ese tipo es algo que como cualquier cambio importante me di cuenta que toma tiempo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;Quiero aclarar algo, me encanta aprender.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; Nunca fuí mal estudiante. En prepa, lo que hacía si el profesor estaba confundiendo a mis compañeros era muy simple, le dejaba de poner atención y me ponía a pensar, en lo que fuera, pero casi siempre en preguntas estilo niño de cinco años, porqué, porqué, porqué y si no tenía preguntas, leía el libro de texto (si es que había uno) y aprendía por mi cuenta lo que le costaba tanto trabajo al profesor explicar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;Todo esto cambió en la universidad, dejó de haber libros.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; Durante toda mi carrera probablemente leí completos dos libros. Pero eso no es lo grave, lo grave es que si no sabes de donde sale el contenido de lo que supuestamente quieres aprender, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;cómo le haces para aprender por tu cuenta?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, no se puede, es requisito irte a sentar al salón a ver de qué se le ocurre hablar al profesor hoy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En la universidad sólo &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;en pocas clases llegué a aprender algo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, de 45 materias que cursé probablemente tuve un aha! en 5, y tal vez exagero. Lo que aprendí nunca fue muy a fondo, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;había que terminar el plan de estudios&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, lo que significaba &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;darse una mojadita de un millón de temas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;, todos relacionados entre sí solo porque pertenecían a la misma lista y seguían uno al otro. Para lograr cubrir el millón de temas no era necesario trabajar más tiempo fuera del salón practicándolos, lo único necesario era &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;sentarse innumerables y largas horas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt; viendo una gran pantalla (eso si muy moderna) con una presentación en powerpoint en donde cada diapositiva contenía cientos de palabras y oraciones en bloques de texto muy difíciles de leer, menos entender, proceso que r&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" &gt;ompía no nada más todas las reglas del sentido común sino de la psicología del aprendizaje&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;. De vez en cuando hacíamos ejercicios, pero muy de vez en cuando. Las tareas eran del tipo prepa, qué es tal, quién fue tal, cuándo se inventó el tal, solo hubo uno que otro proyecto interesante. Las calificaciones reflejaban una mezcla de tu asistencia a la clase, el número de respuestas correctas que tuviste en los exámenes (de las cuales una gran parte involucraba recordar grandes cantidades de información durante poco tiempo), el número de tareas con letra bonita y a tiempo que entregaste, la empatía del profesor hacia ti y, como en todo, un poco de suerte. I think this dramatically increases value to the attendee (while making things significantly harder for the presenters and &lt;em&gt;vastly &lt;/em&gt;harder for the organizers). &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Phillip Greenspun, in a post on &lt;a href="http://www.knowing.net/ct.ashx?id=2f1b5cbb-ea14-43b7-b817-50ed2aec43c2&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fblogs.law.harvard.edu%2fphilg%2f2007%2f08%2f23%2fimproving-undergraduate-computer-science-education%2f" target="_blank"&gt;improving undergraduate CS  quality&lt;/a&gt; that holds for professional training as well, concludes:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Lecturing has been found to be extremely ineffective by all researchers.  The FAA limits lectures to 20 minutes or so in U.S. flight schools. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Lab and project work are where students learn the most.  The school that adopted lab/projects as the core of their approach quickly zoomed to the first position among American undergrad schools of engineering (&lt;a href="http://www.knowing.net/ct.ashx?id=2f1b5cbb-ea14-43b7-b817-50ed2aec43c2&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.olin.edu%2f"&gt;www.olin.edu&lt;/a&gt;).  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Engineers learn by doing progressively larger projects, not by doing what they’re told in one-week homework assignments or doing small pieces of a big project &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Everything that is part of a bachelor’s in CS can be taught as part of a project that has all phases of the engineering cycle, e.g., teach physics and calculus by assigning students to build a flight simulator &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;It makes a lot of sense to separate teaching/coaching from grading and, in the Internet age, it is trivial to do so. Pues esto nos llevó a sacar una pequeña cuenta, ¿cuántas pantallas de PowerPoint habremos visto durante mis 5 años de carrera?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:180%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Más de &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 0, 0);"&gt;75,000&lt;/span&gt; pantallas de PowerPoint&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;durante mi carrera&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: left;"&gt;Si, es algo que da miedo, de esas 75,000 posiblemente no recuerde más de 10 en estos momentos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;¡¡Es momento de dejar de enseñar de esa forma!! Esta visión hace que los profesores tengan cierta prepotencia y soberbia, no están muy dispuestos a aceptar algún comentario que pueda o no contradecir lo que ellos nos están tratando de enseñar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;¿A qué le puede temer el profesor? &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" &gt;Al conocimiento&lt;/span&gt;. Recuerdo un capítulo de los simpson en donde Lisa se roba todos los libros t&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;eachers edition&lt;/span&gt; de los profesores, estos se ven superados al no saber ninguna respuesta, todas las respuestas estaban en los libros &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;teachers edition&lt;/span&gt;. Algo similar nos pasa a nosotros como alumnos; Cierta maestra nos ha prohibido el navegar en Internet mientras estamos en su clase. Ayer nos regañó por estar investigando acerca del tema que ella exponía en clase, le comentamos que a nosotros nos gusta tomar lo que ella dice, buscarlo en internet y tratar de enriquecer el conocimiento que podamos adquirir, a lo que ella nos conestó que no le importaba y que dejaramos de hacer eso.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;¿Qué pasa cuando un alumno sabiendo lo que dice contradice al profesor? Pues esto es inaceptable en estos días, nadie puede saber más que un profesor. Estamos acostumbrados a aceptar todo lo que un profesor diga sin cuestionarlo, cuando alguien cuestiona un profesor, no sabe como reaccionar y la respuesta más sencilla es el regaño...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt; Y pues le tomé la palabra.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Entonces ¿Por qué estoy pagando la escuela? ya que no estoy tomando clases (cosa que me encanta), estoy pagandole a mi escuela para que certifiquen mi conocimiento. Estudio &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales,&lt;/span&gt; la gran mayoría de los que estudian esta carrera han ingresado a esta carrera porque les han prometido mucho dinero. Pues gracias a ellos ¡cada vez hay menos dinero para todos los que estudiamos esto!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El que gente que no tiene la habilidad o el talento para estudiar una carrera hace que la carrera se demerite, son ellos los que hacen que los profesores sean barcos y nadie aprenda nada, son ellos los que cuando tienen su título hacen parecer realmente fácil estudiar una carrera, pues realmente no aprendieron nada más que a pasar materias. Gracias a ellos los títulos universitarios están muy demeritados, gracias a ellos seguramente tendré que estudiar una maestría o un doctorado para poder demostrar &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;en papel&lt;/span&gt; que tengo más conocimientos que ellos, pues ya que los dos tenemos exactamente el mismo título....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;También tenemos que agradecer a las instituciones educativas que hacen cada vez más fácil el poder ingresar a una carrera aunque no tenga el perfil adecuado para hacerlo.
